Dear Lizzy

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Ok, be jealous! I was so very fortunate as to attend a class taught by Dear Lizzy, of Creating Keepsakes and American Crafts, herself!! I've been anxiously awaiting and anticipating this class for months now. It got pushed back 2 times but nothing was going to stop me from going!

And how lucky for me, that I moved to the metropolis where she was teaching, only a little over 2 weeks ago! I made the 1 hour trek from downtown Houston (thanks to my faulty Google maps feed and the miles long access roads) out to the Woodlands for some fun and paper crafting.

I was a bit late but I honestly feel that totally worked out for me in the end, as I got to sit next to Jeri, one of the sweetest and loveliest of ladies. We played catch up the whole time but really just had fun chatting about our travels and my new job. And of course chatting with Lizzy about her sweet girls and the little one on the way.

This was 1 of 2 projects that we made in the class, both featuring some of my favorite Dear Lizzy products. Like that fabric paper! {gasp!!} Amazing!! I'm now hooked and feel the need to invent new and creative ways for incorporating it into my pages and albums.

I have to confess that it wasn't always my intention to create this page for a photo of me and Lizzy. But a nice lady clown (she wasn't in costume) in the class had the idea and I have to confess, I stole it.

I love my page! This was a true "Lizzy" creation through and through and I even got Lizzy herself to sign the page!! And what I mean by "Lizzy" is fun and colorful, girly and sweet. Much like the lady herself who was an absolute doll.

Journaling Reads: "I was so excited to take a class with the lovely Lizzy Kartchner! We played with gorgeous paper and fabulous products, all designed by Lizzy herself. She was so sweet and truly inspiring and a way too cute preggo lady!"

Sketch 215

Monday, August 30, 2010

I'm back with another Monday sketch a la Scrapbook Challenges. It was perfect for the series of photos that I took a few weeks back.

Supplies: Patterned Paper-Basic Grey, Letter Stickers-American Crafts, Ribbon-Making Memories, Clock-Heidi Swapp, Button-Basic Grey, Epoxy Sticker-Making Memories, Other-Binder Clip, White Gel Pen

This is the first time I've ever used a blog post as the basis for a scrapbook page. Probably because, I usually only blog about what I scrap! But I just had to share these photos, they were too vital to my life's "story". Which essentially is what I've been scrapbooking all along.

It only recently occurred to me that it could be considered odd that as a single childless lady, I scrapbook. But it makes perfect sense to me. Whether or not I have children to pass these along to one day doesn't matter. I have them right now, for me!

Start Your Stash

Wednesday, August 18, 2010

Happy Hump Day!! So I went and neglected my blog this week, mainly because I started my new job. Just settling in, trying to work out a new routine. So forgive me if I'm scattered for a bit!

This month, I get to issue the Card Challenge for one of my favorite online homes, Scrapbook Challenges. But the minute I signed up, I was like "why'd you go and do that?!" If you've been a reader for awhile, you know that I struggle with this particular crafty option. I love making cards! I just have problems making them up on my own...and making them look cute. From time to time I'll hit a strike of genius (see Have a Blast, Circle Petal) but more often then not, I end up throwing away my own designs and opt instead, to just scraplift a favorite.

All of that ^^^ really has nothing to do with this month's challenge but I had to add that I don't consider my card marking abilities up to par with the rest of my crafting. Which is why the cards featured this month are lifted versions of designs I adored. Over on the Creating Keepsakes Blog, Kim Kesti designed a lovely card that she adapted from a scrapbook layout. Vivian Masket never fails with her gorgeous October Afternoon creations. And yet again, I had to turn to the master, Kristina Werner for the final card, one that was featured on the latest Finally Friday video.

Ok, now that all that has been said and done, this month's Card Challenge over at Scrapbook Challenges is to Start your Stash! I'm infamous for waiting until the last minute to...well, do anything, but most especially make a birthday card, thank you card, congrats card, etc. For at least the next few occasions, I'll have a previously made card for that special someone!

I sat down for a few hours last weekend and made these cards using the Nook and Pantry line by Basic Grey. Each of these are pretty event generic and the sentiment could very easily have been switched out for one of the others. I choose the top 5 common card themes Thank You, Birthday, Congratulations, Baby and Thinking of You, because those are going to be the cards I'll use the most.

So, my challenge to you is to create at least 2 cards for your card stash this month. Any theme is appropriate, it doesn't have to be one of the five featured here. Be sure to post them over in the SC gallery and link them up here.

Happy Cardmaking yall!

Leaving Home

Sunday, August 15, 2010

It's here, the time has finally come. I get to, for the third time it seems, leave home to strike out on my own.

I left home to move to Austin for undergrad.
I left home to move to London for an internship.
And now, I'm leaving home to move to Houston for my first post-grad job.

I'm beyond excited that this time has come, it's been a year and a half in the making. But I will miss my parent's home. I'll miss them and their silliness, our quiet times, and just being able to talk to them face to face.

I'll miss my dogs. They were the best part of any day and were my constant companions through all of the trials of the previous months and years. As big of pains as they can be, I will miss their wagging tails and seemingly smiling little faces.

Yesterday, as I packed up my stuff, loaded it in my car and drove away, I had to snap some photos. It's atypical of the cliched "getting smaller in my rearview mirror" sentiment, because I had to back up out of the driveway. I got to see full on, my family home get smaller and further away. And it made this whole new beginning bittersweet.

Note on the Photos: I applied texture overlies to give them a vintage feel. They're from Rhonna Farrer's Vintage Photo 2 Tool Kit.

Eat Pray Love

Friday, August 13, 2010

Bali is hot right now! At least it seems that way, with all of the cross promotional marketing going on thanks to the premiere of Eat, Pray, Love. Have yall read that book? It's a good non-fiction read about a writer going through an identity crisis. She takes a year to travel to Italy, India and Indonesia and in the process, finds herself again. I read it for the first time about 4 years ago, as I voraciously devoured any kind of real life travel lit I could get my hands on, never once for even a second thinking that I'd actually make it to that side of the world.

All of the promos and trailers have had me thinking about my own trip to Bali and wanting to scrapbook it in a big way! And thanks to Noell and her fabulous paperclipping.com video tutorials, I've done just that!

The latest video released is call Assembly Line Mini-booking. In it, Noell describes her method for getting a mini book together relatively fast. And without any "sacrificial layouts" or those tag-on pages that you throw together at the end because you just want to get the thing done!

BTW, that's my number one issue with mini books! I get so bogged down in the details and wanting to make them these awesome publish worthy specimens. But let's face it, that hype really only lasts for the first page or two. Then I get bored and the latter half of my mini's suffer. However, thanks to Noell, my mini's will suffer no longer! I really recommend this membership and have results to back it up! [See below] So if you haven't yet subscribed to Paperclipping, perhaps now is a good time to start! Just saying ;)

So here is my latest and greatest mini! The fab little Bali number that I am in love with! I got this sheer 8x6.5 in. binder from Target. (And I'm sorry but I can't find it on the Target website!! Will go hunting for the brand name though because they are awesome!) It's original purpose was as a planner. I very simply decorated the cover because you get to see some of the paper peeking through, which I love. The cute little palm tree is by Jolee's and the letters are American Crafts Thickers.

When I was going through all of my photos, picking out the ones I wanted to use for this mini, I decided on the green/orange/kraft/blue color scheme. So lucky for me, the title page that came along with the binder was orange!

I started the journaling with us getting off the plane, and the adventure that ensued even just then! But since I didn't have specific photos of any of them, I stuck them at the beginning along with the title page.

Journaling Reads:

Sarah and I got into Bali on a dark night after a full day of traveling. I remember we had issues trying to actually clear customs and get into the country, the primary issue being no monies to pay for our visas. Which is silly when you think about it! We were fresh off the plane, we hadn’t had time to get any Balinese currency yet! So Sarah had to make a break for the exit (just kidding she really only had to ask) to get to an ATM to pay our way in.
We had very wisely opted to take our hotel up on their offer to pick us up at the airport and Robert, our driver, was there waiting for us. We had no idea that it would take 2 hours to get to our hotel. Because come on, Bali’s suppose to be a tiny island! Even tiny islands take time to get across I have since learned. We drove clear across from North to South, going up the mountain in the process and winding (and I do mean wi-nd-ing) down to get to Lovina Beach where our hotel was located.

These were pretty simple and straightforward pages. I let the photos do most of the talking but had some fun handwriting the journaling direct to page. And I adore those Prima Flowers!! They're so lovely and tropical!

Journaling Reads:

Our hotel featured cute little bungalows right on the waterfront. There were gorgeous palm trees and tropical foliage everywhere. The beautiful shades of greens were welcome sites to our flora-starved eyes, having just lived in the concrete metropolis of Bangkok. And best of all, the beach was right there!
See that one?! That one right there? The one that I love, my most favorite page in the book. Yeah, that one! The one on the left =)

The "B" side to that lovely green scroll patterned paper was an equally lovely black and cream hounds-tooth. I decided to get artsy with it and painted it with a few shades of blue and some grey. I love how you can see bits of the patterned peeking through. I think I also like this page because of how well the color balances with the Spring layout. The black/grey/blue totally complements the green/white/orange of the next page. And again, another beautiful Prima Flower! Those orange flowers were the first thing I purchased when I was thinking about doing this album. I guess you could say, I designed this album around them!

Journaling Reads:

But...little did we know that we arrived in this luscious tropical oasis right in the middle of monsoon season! It was somewhat gloomy and overcast the majority of the time we were there. We made the most of it, and definitely got enough sun when we made our way to Lombok. But that’s another story.
Robert drove us on a tour around the Northern part of the island, to visit various sites and attractions. Our first stop was to these amazing natural hot springs at Banjar, where we lounged in the water and just enjoyed life, post-Bangkok, post-thesis and post-MBA.
The next couple of pages are divided by my little journaling insert. Which, btw is a digital overlay done by Ali Edwards (love!). I decided to print this one on transparency but with the busyness of the next page, opted to back it with white. But not before I added some 7 Gypsies printed tape to the edge, to give it a little reinforcement when I punched the holes out.

The previous page is a quick and simple layout of a stop off to see some rice paddies. I don't know what my deal is, but lately I've been adding food to my pages!! The "R" at the corner is a die cut that has rice glued on top. I added some Diamond glaze to it so it wouldn't be falling off and hit it with some brown Maya Mist to give it some color. I also spray misted the background with Green and Emerald Metallic Maya Mist, to help enhance the colors in the photos. That mousy green just wasn't cutting it!

Journaling Reads:

Another stop we made was just on the side of the road, to see these gorgeously verdant rice paddies that were planted along this hill. That’s Robert there next to Sarah, our lovely Indonesia guide and driver.
This was a super simple layout, just because the photos demanded it. I know I went a little overboard grouping all of these busy photos together on one page, but I think it lends itself to the design of the temple. Everywhere we looked there was something, not just one intricately carved statue, but thirty five!

Journaling Reads:

And we stopped at a temple, because you can’t visit Bali without seeing a temple. Having just come from Thailand, the land of glitz and gold and monstrously large temples, it was interesting to see the vast difference in this smaller temple in Bali, which featured lots of stonework and tons of greenery. I loved that huge fountain in the middle of the courtyard. I think this could have been Robert’s home temple. He knew everyone there and this lady we bought a drink from, told us she knew his mother. I appreciated the smaller homey feel to the place, the not so touristy option, even though it’s clearly very gorgeous and should be seen.
I also went artsy on this grey page! The original color was actually purple and if you look closely you can see traces of that. I "white-washed" the paper with grey acrylic paint and then stipled it in for a deeper gray. Then I hit it with some silver Maya Mist to get those fun blotches. I'm loving the texture of it and will definitely be creating more backgrounds with this technique.

That orange paper is actually handmade with some natural fibers running through it. I more or less let it and the photos do the work on this page and only added my journaling and a title to make them the focal points.

Journaling Reads:

Along the way, we stopped at an overlook of the Twin Lake (Tamblingan and Buyan Lake). It was very calm and peaceful up there, but very very hot! The humidity was weighing down on us then, as a storm was about to roll in.
Which is why it was raining when we got to Git Git, the famous waterfall in Bali. It was lovely and ethereal and very surreal to have it all to ourselves for a few moments, as who else would be touring during the middle of a rain shower!

These last few pages are fairly simple and straightforward, with some nice texture and lovely graphic elements. I love white rub-ons and this fancy scroll from Basic Grey is fabulous!

Journaling Reads:

The last morning we were there, we decided to go on the dolphin excursion. It was tough getting up at 6 am in the middle of our holiday but beyond words worth it!

So we get into this long skinny skiff thing that has a balancing pole on top and 4 bucket seats for passengers and the driver balanced himself near the engine. We scooted around in the water along with about 20 other skiffs, all in the pursuit of dolphins. We didn’t manage to find any, but being out on the water, starting our day with the sun and just realizing that we actually were in Bali was enough of adventure for me.
I couldn't make an album about Bali and not include a photo of their crisp cool aqua-y water! I cut the "timeless" title out of an American Crafts wave patterned paper which so perfectly matched the colors in the photo!

I also wanted to include some final thoughts and printed directly onto the "back page" that came with the planner. A quick tip, utilize your Windings font! That's where the fancy little scroll came from. And boo, I accidently crumpled the edge of the page. It's driving me nuts but I'm sure I'll get over it! ...or switch it with Sarah's end page (muahahaha!!)

Journaling Reads:

Bali has the clearest aqua-est water I have ever seen. This photo was taken from the top of the water, as I was sitting in a boat. Not with a fancy underwater camera. That’s how clean and beautiful it was.

As corny as it sounds, Bali was a place to detox from the hectic life we were leading in Bangkok. With all of BKK's hustle and bustle, the never ending stream of assignments and presentations, and that God awful thesis, getting to spend a week relaxing and touring Bali was heaven sent. I'm so thankful that I got to visit this island paradise and that I got to spend time with one of my best bff's, before we embarked on our separate lives without each other {tear}. Don't cry for us yet! Bali was only one part of a 2 week Southeast Asian adventure! Stay tuned...

If you've actually made it this far into the post, gold star for you! That was a lot of words! Didn't think I had it in me :) But truly, I love this mini for a multitude of reasons. The time, the place, the event, were one of the happiest of my life. I'm once again thankful for this little hobby of ours and how it helps me to never forget and always remember how truly blessed my life has been! Thanks for stopping by yall! Happy Scrapping!

Hybrid: Words on Photos

Thursday, August 12, 2010

I know! I know! I'm a tad bit late in posting this. But I've had the biggest mental block concerning this page. It could have something to do with the photo's significance. No! It definitely has something to do with that! I mean it's a photo of me, James and Patrick standing on the Great Wall of China!! If that's not a totally epic photo to scrapbook, I don't know what is.

I really wanted this photo to be the main focal point of this layout, so I felt that adding some text to it would immediately draw your eye in. I added this Remember Word Art from Ali Edwards because it truly encapsulates everything that I wanted to say about this photo, in a fabulously graphic way.

Which is why, as the Hybrid Diva over at Ch{all}enge Masters, I chose adding text to photos as this month's challenge.

And then the white text became a theme in this layout. I added some white letter stickers, and did my journaling with my handy white gel pen. It was late when I wrote it so it doesn't really make much sense but the jist of it was that not only did we get to see the Great Wall of China, but we also hiked it! A whole 10k portion of it. That's about 6 miles people! I can definitely say I've been up close and personal with that Wall.

It's hard to tell due to the quality of the photo, but as far as you can see in this photo, we walked. Up and down, twisting and turning with the wall itself. Let me tell you, those hills were KILLING me! There was literally a moment when I sat down and was like "James, I don't know if I'm gonna make it." But I did, I survived the walk!

I have so much more to talk about concerning this experience, but I'll have to save that for future scrapbook pages. Because believe me, this is not the last you will be seeing from this day! For now, I'm just happy to have this one page done!

BLOGIVERSARY!!

Hip hip hooray! Today's the day :)
A milestone for my little blog...

It's the paper heART project's one year
BLOGIVERSARY!!

I've had so much fun blogging this year. My little project has truly been a blessing in a very surprising way. I'm so grateful to all 60 of you followers over there! You are so appreciated, I'll have you know!

So I've been thinking about what I should talk about, on this, my 1 year anniversary post and had this idea to share some of my favorite and most used products. I'll talk them up now and show, over the next week or so, how I incorporate them time and time again, into my pages.

Without further adieu, here are my top 10 product picks of...hmm...well, I'll just say it, of ALL time!

1. Neutral Backgrounds: I love them, wether slightly patterned or just plain cardstock they're the first place I start any given layout. I adore the Basic Grey Basics line! And Kraft cardstock..{swoon} Well, I just can't get enough!

2. Patterned Paper: It's my scrapbook kryptonite, truly it is. If I could scrap with nothing else in my stash, I'd head straight to my patterned paper files. These are just an infinitesimally small sampling of some of my favorite patterned paper brands; Sassafras, Basic Grey, Studio Calico, Making Memories, American Crafts and October Afternoon.

3. Adhesive: Now, you can't scrap without some good ol' glue! This is the product I'm loving at the moment. Tombo Mono adhesive. Super easy to use, very tacky, and inexpensive refills are just a few of the reasons I'm digging it.

4. Pens: I've been realizing how often I turn to my pens for my projects these days. My basic black is an American Crafts Slick Writer. I've never loved a pen as much as I love this one! I've also found myself using white ink a lot more. Adds great contrast to those pages!

5. Letter Stickers: I can't scrap a page without my letter stickers!! Thickers especially, I adore. But who doesn't?! Seriously, there needs to be a Thicker rehab. I easily have over 60 packages and that's not even a lot compared to some of the die hard Thicker gals. I'm also always on the hunt for smaller letter stickers. The Micro Mono's put out by Basic Grey are the perfect small letter size! I also totally love the mixed type by My Little Shoebox, the small circles by Jenni Bowlin, and the tiny tabs by October Afternoon.

6. Border Punches: I use these a ton! Just scroll down and see how big the label "Border Punch" is down there. 1 out of 3 of my layouts features some border punch or other. My go-to's are Apron Lace by Fiskars, Loops Edger by Martha Stewart and now this Bracket Edger punch by EK Success.

7. Circle Punches: Seriously, it's the number one thing I recommend to new scrapbookers when they ask about what products to buy. Circle punches are so unbelievable versatile, they're the little black dress of the scrapbooking world. You can dress 'em up, dress up down, go to town, all with a circle punch!

8. Maya Mist: Lately, I've been using (or at least considering) it for ever project I create. There is so much fun to be had with a couple oz bottle of colorful goodness! If you're interested in amping your layouts up a notch, definitely consider investing in a bottle or two! Or try the Red/Silver sampler! You can't go wrong!

9. Baker's Twine: Ok, so you might not get what the big deal is about this stuff, but you have to see it on some pages! They're awesome! And even though I only have it in these three colors, they get a lot 'o use, let me tell you.

10. Chalk Ink: Another ink! Hmm..never really considered myself an inky kinda girl but here we have me recommending it again. I love these chalk inks! They're my go to ink if I'm going to do any kind of stamping. I love the softer look to them, but the still vibrant colors!

So there you have my Top 10 favorite products! Check back this afternoon for a look at the so fun RAK I'm giving away in celebration of my blogiversary!! And don't forget to come back this week to see how I've used all these great products this past year. But seriously, thanks so much for stopping by my little home on the internet. I heart yall so much!

Have a Blast!

Tuesday, August 10, 2010

Tada! Here's one of mama's birthday presents. A bit odd, I know. But that's my mama! She likes what she likes and does not care what anyone else thinks. One of her latest (yet lasting) obsessions is pirate and skull themed paraphernalia. She has sunglasses, flip flops, plastic cups, all that fun stuff.

But, the cu de gra to her collection? A tiny metal pirate ship complete with skull shaped glass vodka bottle. You too can purchase one if you so desire, from Dean & Deluca at that! I guess I'm much the same, I collect Dia de los Muertos dolls and figurines. I know they say that you get your decorating taste from you mother, they definitely weren't lying!

A few weeks ago I was perusing the Urban Outfitters website and found this cute little bomb timer and I knew instantly mama would definitely appreciate it. And then I based my card off the bomb's design.

I hand cut a circle (with one flat edge) out of white cardstock, inked the edges with Tim Holtz's Black Soot distress ink and cut the skull using my Slice and the Just Chillin' Design Card. Added some Basic Grey Micro Mono letter stickers and finished it off with a black pipe cleaner! I'm sure she'll like it, that crazy woman! Love her to death! (pun intended)

Sketch 212

Monday, August 9, 2010

Monday again, you know what that means! A Scrapbook Challenges sketch :)

So my mama's birthday is tomorrow. As always, I love to give scrappy gifts and knew a few of the photos I took this past weekend while Urijah was visiting, would make for a great framed layout for her. But...I also wanted to create something for his album. Originally I wasn't going to make two different layouts, but when I walked into my LSS today, saw that gorgeous Cosmo Cricket patterned paper (2nd layout) I knew I'd have to use it! I'd also like to add that I was very influenced by today's 2Ps layout of the day, done by Tina in Indy.

As you can see, I was so very influenced by his coral shirt and her coordinating coral and pink dress. (I wonder if she planned it that way. Hmm...) and dug through my scraps to find pink and coral paper. They're older pieces and I hit them with some salmon metallic Maya Mist to even them out a bit. I also misted the kraft background to give it some pizzaz.

The flower and the swirly were cut with my Slice and used the Vintage Findings design card. To give the flower some depth, I chalk inked the edges, backed it with white cardstock and added a brad. I love that I can use my little Slice to make my own custom embellishments!

This second layout features the same photos and identical title and journaling. I found the quote I used for the journaling from this book we use to sell at the LSS I worked for, The Ultimate Guide to the Perfect Word. Everything is divided into categories alphabetically so I just turned to the section on grandparents and found this:

"Come Grandma, walk with me...
Help me to be the best kid I can be.
Take me here and take me there...
Show me now how much you care.
The many hours we share together...
Will be the times I'll always remember."

I thought it was too perfect for these pages about my mama and her grandson. She truly is a great mama and an even better grandma! Urijah's lucky to have her, as well am I!

Thank You Gifts

Wednesday, August 4, 2010

So I have some big personal news...after this week I'll be moving up to Houston for an amazing job opportunity! I'm so very excited and can't wait to get going! But, it's slightly bittersweet as I love the group of ladies that I currently work with. I didn't want to leave without letting the lovely ladies there know how much I appreciate them. These are their little parting gifts, a card and a photo holder.

Since I've been so sick and so out of it these last few days, and let's face it, not at all crafty, I turned to one of my tried and true sources of inspiration, the Studio Calico gallery. Loved this Thank You Card by Kimberly, all of the layers and the pretty patterned paper. I didn't have enough of the Girls Paperie' patterned paper that she used, but substituted this gorgeous sheet of Making Memories Vintage Findings floral print. It has this pretty glossy texture to it; awesome for something that isn't stuck behind a page protector.

I've also really wanted to make some of these Wooden Spool Photo Holders, that the lovely Stephanie (aka thelivingroomfloor) showcased on the SC blog awhile back. I thought they'd be the perfect little parting gift to accompany my cards.

I hope they like them :) Thanks yall for stopping by!
